No search engine searches the entire Internet. What search engines do is to use "spiders" which are computer programs that look for sites which people may like. These "spiders" then take the Internet address and add it to their list. When you use a search engine, you are searching their list, not the Internet. Since each search engine has a different list, you are searching different lists when you use different search engines.

I use ask.com , yahoo.com , and google.com for the following reasons. You should never rely on one search engine for all your searching.

ASK - is a great resource for quick reference questions. It Is a natural language search engine which works best if you ask questions in full sentences. It is the only search engine I am aware of that actually answers questions, not just providing a list of sites. For example in Ask, type "What is the captial of France" "When did Napolean die?"

YAHOO - works best using keywords, not sentences. It is very good with anything having to to with money and pop culture such as music, movies, television, and shopping.

GOOGLE - should not be the only search engine you use. It is very large and fast but because of that, it will give you so many sites. It also works best using keywords. If you are searching for phrases, put the phrase in quotes. For example when looking for songs, put the title in quotes. Google also has some built in commands. One that I use the most is "define: " You don't need to go to a dictionary site if you use this command. One note about Google. While it is good to be as specific as possible, Google only pays attention to the first 10 words in a search so don't bother typing more than 10 words in each search

Below is a list of search engines grouped by their type. A Natural Language search engine works best when you use natural language (full sentences.) Standard search engines work best with keywords. Meta Search Engines should be your absolute last choice if you can't find what you are looking for. They don't maintain their own lists but rather look through several other search engines all at once.

Good luck and happy searching!
